Cyncoed Campus Centre
Client: Cardiff Metropolitan University
The first phase of re-development plan was the replacement of the student union and facilities. Following research at other Universities in the UK and USA the student union and UWIC adopted a modern campus centre development to replace the outdated student union building and associated facilites.
The development required the demolition of a redundant boiler house, following a programme of decentralisation, and the adjacent refectory 2, laundry and print shop. The contracts was undertaken using the NEC3 option C target cost form of contract and completed early and below target cost
An enabling works programme was required to provide a new laundry, which also entailed a temporary laundry unit during the construction of the new facility to meet the programme. Also a new ‘grab and go’ café was constructed to enable demolition of the old refectory area and kitchen. Replacement of main LV switch room panels and compelte transfer and shut down management of electrical supplies.
The new Campus Centre accommodates the student union offices and student facilities to provide a central meeting place for up to 500 students. The Campus Centre comprises a bar/restaurant; coffee lounge and social learning area plus new kitchen; plant room; beer cellar, toilets and a print room.
The contract also included for the fit-out of the Campus Centre including bar counters etc feature lighitng; canteen equipment together with seating, tables etc to the lounge/dining areas.
